App Development: Building Mobile Applications
Building Mobile Applications
Design interactive mobile apps using visual blocks, buttons, and sounds to solve everyday problems as creators.

About this Workshop
This workshop is part of Creya Learning's Makers Day Out 101 Series, a collection of immersive, hands-on experiences that enables students to learn as creators, makers and problem-solvers. Each workshop combines technology, creativity, collaboration and reflection to help students transform their ideas into meaningful solutions.
The App Development workshop introduces younger learners to the exciting idea that they can build technology and not merely use it. Students learn how screens, buttons, images, sounds and programming blocks can be combined to create simple mobile applications.
Students explore basic programming concepts to create applications such as interactive stories or simple calculators. By seeing their instructions produce a visible response on the screen, they begin to understand how digital applications work. The experience develops computational thinking, logical reasoning, creativity and the confidence to become creators of technology.

Workshop Schedule
Introduction to Apps and App Development
Explore what applications do and how they respond to users. Distinguish between using an app and building one. Examine how interfaces, inputs, instructions and outputs work together.
Meet MIT App Inventor
Become familiar with the Designer and Blocks workspaces. Add buttons, text, images and sounds and connect a simple user action to a programmed response.
Guided Project 1: Interactive Story or Character
Create an age-appropriate app using images, text, buttons, sounds and screen interactions. Programme events that make the app respond when the user taps or selects an option.
Guided Project 2: Interactive Learning App
Build a second app involving simple choices, feedback, scores or calculations. Grades 1–3 may create a matching activity, choice app or tap game; Grades 4–6 may create a quiz, calculator or learning tool.
App Challenge: Imagine and Plan
Receive an age-appropriate challenge. Identify the app's purpose and intended user, select the main features and sketch the required screens, buttons and interactions.
App Challenge: Build, Test and Improve
Create an original application. Design the interface, programme the interactions and test each feature. Identify problems and improve the app using peer feedback.
App Showcase and Reflection
Core Learning Pillars
Application Foundations
See how screens, inputs, programmed behaviour and outputs make up an app.
Visual Block-Based Programming
Arrange programming blocks to define what the application should do.
User Interface Design
Arrange text, buttons and images to make an app clear and easy to use.
Testing and Debugging
Test the app, find why something did not work and correct it.
Computational Thinking
Break the application into smaller screens, actions and logical steps.
Creativity and Communication
Use characters, stories, images, sound and interaction to share an idea.
Student as Technology Creator
Develop the confidence to design and build digital experiences rather than only consume them.
Why Participate?
Build an application instead of only using applications created by others.
Explore how user actions trigger programmed instructions and outputs.
Apply acquired skills to develop a digital experience of your own.
Break a larger idea into smaller screens, actions and logical steps.
Work with sequences, events, conditions, variables and feedback.
Use stories, characters, images, sounds, games and interactions within an app.
Learn that mistakes provide clues and can be corrected through careful testing.
Create interfaces and instructions that others can understand and use.
Develop foundational coding and digital-making skills for future Robotics and STEAM challenges.
